History

Cyberlympics - Tanks

Back in 2010 Marc was playing around with HTML5/js in his spare time and was curious as to what could be done. He decided to build a game, where programmers could send AI into battle. The plan was to create multiple challenges. The most prominent idea was based on robocode, where little tanks fight each other. The bots could be programmed in javascript and it was possible to have up to 100 tanks fighting each other. The game worked, but there were only very few players, possibly due to the terrible marketing capabilities (~0).

Cyberlympics - Racing

Thinking he could get more people to play, if it was also possible for real people to take part in the battles, the idea of a racing game was born. This posed new issues as performance was of much higher importance. The switch to WebGL cost a lot of time, but the game engine ran much more fluidly. Why was the racing game dropped? Motivation sank as multiplayer seemed impossible. Additionally an organization aquired and started cyberlympics.org, dampening enthusiasm drastically.

Devader

Devader was started during a ZFX.info Action (game jam) in December 2015. Creating a single player experience seemed more achievable. What started out as a quick challenge, turned into a 1.5+ year endeavour. The chosen technology is continually one of the greatest challenges to the project. Javascript performance has increased massively, but it remains a challenge to handle thousands of objects with collisions on screen. Sometimes it has been a nightmare, but at the same time it has been a great learning process.
